"All Day Research" Podcast: Seventh episode with Prof. Dr. Tobias Matzner online

 |  EIM-NachrichtenCS-Nachrichten

In the seventh episode of the "All Day Research" podcast we welcome Prof. Dr. Tobias Matzner from Media Studies. He talks with our host Lukas Ostermann about the topic of computer science and society.

Prof. Dr. Tobias Matzner started his academic career by studying Computer Science at the University of Karlsruhe and later earned a PhD in Philosophy. Currently, he is part of the media studies department at the University of Paderborn as professor for "Media Algorithms and Society". His preference for interdisciplinary research not only stands out in his previous career, but is also united in his current research field. "Computer science has the task of translating anything that exists in the world into a mathematical formalism / formula, because only then can you process it with machines. [...] Seen quite abstractly, philosophy is also a translation process. Not necessarily mathematically, but into conceptual systems that allow us to understand something better," explains Mr. Matzner. He also talks about significant differences between these two disciplines during the interview.

As well as working in the area of "Computer Science and Society," Prof. Dr. Matzner is also involved in the Transregio Collaborative Research Center 318 "Constructing Explainability." "Artificial intelligence in this form has produced a certain, empirical "turn" in computer science," says Mr. Matzner. In the current episode, he explains how important and exciting it is to observe how computer science and society interact through the increasing use of artificial intelligence. "I think this is a topic that is important in computer science as well. [...] Especially here in Paderborn. There are not many computer science departments that have wholly and professionally dealt with the topic area of "computer science and society", so to speak," adds Mr. Matzner.

The podcast was created in cooperation with the Institute of Computer Science and the Computer Science Student Council. The aim is to give more insight into science and thereby bring students - especially those in the first semester - closer to the study, to arouse interest and to show how much fun research and the study of computer science at the University of Paderborn can be.
