In the summer semester 2024, numerous graduates of the Computer Science, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Mathematics (EIM) and the PLAZ - Professional School of Education at Paderborn University were given their farewells. In addition to certificates, several prizes were awarded for special commitment or outstanding theses.

Faculty EIM

The Faculty of EIM at Paderborn University celebrated the graduates of this year's graduating class at the end of June. In addition to the former Bachelor's and Master's students, including numerous international students, the faculty's doctoral graduates were also presented with their congratulatory certificates. Prof Dr Jürgen Klüners, Dean of the Faculty, and Prof Dr Völker Schöppner, Vice President for Teaching, Studies and Quality Management, congratulated those present in the packed Audimax.

Prof Manuel Hartung, Chairman of the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, gave this year's speech at the graduation ceremony on the topic of "The university capable of uncertainty". Henric Menne also addressed a few warm words to his (former) fellow students from the ranks of the students.

The prizes for outstanding academic achievements, sponsored by dSpace, Phoenix Contact, S&N Invent, Wöhler and Achelos, were awarded in the summer semester 2024 to Benjamin Koop (Bachelor's degree at the Institute of Electrical Engineering), Felix Johann Hahn (Master's degree at the Institute of Electrical Engineering), Leo Decking (Bachelor's degree at the Institute of Computer Science), Alexander Philipp Nowosad (Master's degree at the Institute of Computer Science), Carlo Kaul (Bachelor's degree at the Institute of Mathematics) and Lukas Langen (Master's degree at the Institute of Mathematics). Dean of Studies Prof. Dr.-Ing. Katrin Temmen presented the Weierstraß Teaching Award 2024 for outstanding teaching, which was awarded to Dr Hans Franzen from the Institute of Mathematics in the "Teacher" category and Markus Hennig from the Institute of Electrical Engineering as exercise group leader.

PLAZ - Professional School of Education

Around 150 graduates celebrated the successful completion of their teacher training programme at Paderborn University in the Audimax at the beginning of July. At the atmospheric ceremony, which was held under the motto "The achievements of an organisation are the result of the joint efforts of each individual", the prospective teachers of this year's graduating class were presented with their congratulatory certificates.

Prof Dr Bardo Herzig, Director of the PLAZ - Professional School of Education, congratulated the graduates on their success. He also looked ahead to the everyday working life of future teachers and emphasised that this could only be shaped in schools through everyone's commitment to the community. The above motto of the graduating class, for which a quote from former American football coach Vince Lombardi was chosen, should also be understood in this sense.

Prof Dr Volker Schöppner, Vice President for Teaching, Studies and Quality Management at Paderborn University, congratulated them on behalf of the Presidential Board and also emphasised the team spirit. "The Executive Board's congratulations go to all graduates and their families and friends. Only together can a degree programme succeed," he emphasised. Michèle Doré and Carolin Honermann, both graduates themselves and members of the Student Council for Teacher Education, which had helped organise the ceremony, also joined in the congratulations and took those present on a humorous journey through everyday student life. Prof. Dr Rita Burrichter, 1st Chair of the PLAZEF alumni association, emphasised that graduation does not have to mean saying goodbye to the university for good. "Stay connected to UPB and especially to the people you have made friends with here. PLAZEF offers the perfect opportunity to do this," she said, emphasising the value of an active alumni network.

Afterwards, several graduates were honoured for special achievements. Kira Brinkwirth and Michèle Doré received awards for extraordinary commitment, sponsored by the Education and Science Trade Union and the NRW Philologists' Association. Dilara Sıdıka Doğan and Tessa Mette received the PLAZEF prize, sponsored by the financial services provider MLP, for outstanding final theses.
