Sub­ject areas at Pader­born Uni­ver­sity achiev­ing ex­cel­lent res­ults in the in­ter­na­tion­al CWTS Leiden Rank­ing 2023

The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands has once again commended the publication achievements of researchers at Paderborn University this year. This international university ranking, which has been conducted every year since 2007, uses publications to compare universities and specific subject areas.

The latest edition of the ranking looked at the 1,411 most frequently publishing universities from 72 countries, including 57 in Germany. How often publications were cited is an indication of the quality of the researchers’ work. The subject areas of mathematics and computer science at Paderborn University often do particularly well in the Leiden Ranking.

First place in Germany

In the current comparison period (2018 to 2021), 17.4 percent of Paderborn publications in this subject category were among the 10 percent most cited worldwide. In this area, Paderborn University holds 43rd place for scientific ‘impact’ among all of the ranked universities worldwide, and first place in Germany.

Across the overall university ranking looking at the proportion of a university’s publications belonging to the to 10 percent most cited worldwide, Paderborn University currently sits in 588th place on an international level and in 30th place in Germany. By comparison, there are more than 20,000 universities on the planet.
