Weierstrass Lecture 2016

Professor Dr Manjul Bhargava
Professor Dr Manjul Bhargava (born 1974 in Hamilton (Ontario), Canada) will give the 2016 Weierstrass Lecture. He works in the field of number theory and is a recipient of the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award given to mathematicians.
After studying mathematics at Harvard University and later at Princeton University, Manjul Bhargava completed his doctorate in 2001 under the British mathematics professor Sir Andrew Wiles at Princeton University. His doctoral dissertation entitled "Higher Composition Laws" deals with the Gaussian composition of binary integer quadratic forms known since 1801, to which he added higher composition laws. He discovered that there are at least 14 such higher composition laws. These results are considered groundbreaking in number theory.
Mr Bhargava also attracted great attention with his simple proof of the so-called "15 theorem" and a proof of the "290 theorem" (with Jonathan P. Hanke). Of particular importance are his results on the rank of elliptic curves over the rational numbers, obtained jointly with his doctoral candidate Arul Shankar, in which they proved that the fraction of elliptic curves over the rational numbers of rank 0 satisfying the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture has positive measure.
Manjul Bhargava is an award-winning mathematician:
- 1996 Frank and Brennie Morgan Prize (for papers written during his studies at Harvard)
- 2003 Merten M. Hasse Prize
- 2004 Leonard M. and Eleanor B. Blumenthal Award
- 2005 Clay Research Award
- 2005 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize
- 2008 Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Number Theory
- 2011 Prix Fermat
- 2014 Fields Medal
- 2015 Padma Bhushan.
Today, Manjul Bhargava is Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University. He received this position two years after his doctorate, at the age of just 28, and thus goes down in the history of the youngest professors at Princeton University.
A very nice video about Manjul Bhargava was made for the 2014 Fields Medal award ceremony, in which you can get to know him a little better. You can watch the video here.
We are very pleased to welcome Prof Dr Manjul Bhargava as a speaker at the Weierstrass Lecture 2016.
